About Me
Hi, I'm Mehrdad Jafari Raad, an Iranian-born Composer and Sound Designer, currently based in Toronto. My music journey spans instrumental compositions for various ensembles and electronic sounds. From short films and feature movies to AudioVisual art and interactive video games, I craft music for diverse media.
My musical background lies in traditional Iranian music, and I'm skilled in Tar and Setar performance. I also lecture on Iranian music. I pursued Western music during my master's at the Art University of Tehran under supervision of Mohammad Reza Tafazzoli. Currently, I'm pursuing a DMA in Composition at the University of Toronto with Christos Hatzis as my guide.
My compositions echo influences from various musical cultures I've been exposed to. Growing up in Tehran's politically charged and culturally rich environment, themes of power dynamics, resistance and hope naturally find a place in my work. In personal level I explore themes such as identity and fragmentation, migration and dislocation, geopolitical diversity, and human condition.
